Mid-sea tragedy averted, 88 people rescued

On Saturday around 10:15 am 88 people including 4 children and 20 women on board a passenger boat were rescued as the vessel started sinking near Mandwa jetty. All passengers on the boat were rescued in the nick of time.

The boat from Ajanta Ferry Service Company which had set out from Gateway of India at 9 am started to sink a kilometre short of its destination at Mandwa around 10.15 am. An alert constable along with others of the coastal patrolling team saved the day for the passengers.

According to Assistant Police Inspector Suresh Yamgar, "People on board panicked and started screaming for help even as five crew members on the boat tried to pacify."

The police said that the coxswain and some of the passengers on board had claimed that the boat "possibly hit a rock underwater" and water started gushing inside and slowly the boat started to sink".
