International chamber of Shipping (ICS) data reveals that the shipping industry will need around 150,000 seafarers by May 15.
Crew change due will approximately be 40,000 from Philippines, 20,000 from India, 15,000 from Ukraine and 10,000 from China. COVID-19 pandemic has caused seafarers to be stranded and crew change has become nearly impossible because of flight services cancelled worldwide.
The worldwide population of seafarers serving on international trading merchant ships is estimated at 1,647,500, out of which 774,000 are officers and 873,500 are ratings.
China, Philippines, Indonesia, Russian Federation and Ukraine are estimated to be the five largest supply countries for all seafarers (Officers and ratings). Philippine is the biggest supplier of ratings while China is major supplier of Officers.
